Who is Risa Bee? A person? Daughter? Friend? Creator? Those were questions I had for so long.
I grew up an only child in one of the rough areas of Tacoma, Washington. I had a mother and stepfather who loved me and, despite working 3 jobs between the two of them, did their best to give me everything I needed. I was happy, loved, and surrounded by caring friends. But my life was forever changed on October 6th, 2007, when I watched my best friend, my mom, depart from this world.
I am very lucky to have had an aunt and an uncle take me in and raise me as their own. For that, I am eternally grateful, and I love them more than words could ever describe. But I had seen things that the 10-year-old mind could not comprehend. I shut myself away from the world and sought protection and meaning in the world of music.
I began my musical journey in the beginning of 2008, when my guardians allowed me to start lessons in singing and piano. Not too long after was when I took up cello. I started out being trained classically and to this day I continue to practice and hone my skills.
This path led me to the wonderful organization, the Tacoma Youth Symphony, which taught me so many skills and lessons that will remain with me until I leave this earth. My experiences there as well as my wonderful band, orchestra, and choir teachers, lead me to pursue my musical passions in college. I started school at Central Washington University with my major declared as a music education major.
Over time, passions and visions change. You grow, learn new things, meet new people, and have new experiences. In 2018, I had asked my aunt and uncle to adopt me because they had always been my second parents and in early 2019, they were legally my mom and dad. But my world was again changed when my uncle had a severe stroke.
This was the change that led to me find a new passion; voice over. From a young age, he encouraged me to get into acting, and if it was destined for him to leave this world sooner than we expected, I wasn’t going to let that happen without him seeing his dream for me.
For 2 years, I have been gaining experience, working in projects, and meeting so many new and wonderful people who welcomed me into the community with open arms. This also led me to change my major to a music B.A with minors in film and digital marketing.
So, who is Risa Bee? Well, all the above, and more. Risa Bee is simply me, and I am she. The road ahead is scary, but I can’t wait to see what’s waiting for me.
